Sadly the Oral Cancer Foundation reports every hour of every day in America someone dies of Oral Cancer and presently 30,000 people are diagnosed annually with oral cancer.

Fortunately Dr. Durso & Associates offer patients VELscope the latest technology to aid in the early screening, diagnosis and treatment of Oral Cancer which is the sixth most common diagnosed form of cancer in the United States.

At Risk Information Understanding the causative factors of cancer will contribute to prevention of the disease. Age is frequently named as a risk factor for oral cancer, as most of the time it occurs in those over the age of 40.

Tobacco and alcohol are essentially chemical factors, but they can also be considered lifestyle factors, since we have some control over them. Besides these, there are physical factors such as exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This is a causative agent in cancers of the lip, as well as other skin cancers.

Biological factors include viruses and fungi, which have been found in association with oral cancers.

Your probably don't have oral cancer and in just a few minutes you can be sure.

At your next appointment, in just 3 to 5 minutes, you can receive a comprehensive oral cancer examination.

This exam includes a visual and tactile exploration of the interior of your mouth, as well as the underside of your chin and neck.

We may use a special light or a special dye to aid in the discovery of tissues which are suspicious. If an area of concern is located, we may use a small brush to collect cells from that area for examination under a microscope.

Should Dr. Durso suspect that something is abnormal, it is standard procedure to refer you to a specialist for another opinion, and perhaps even a small, painless biopsy of the tissue in question. Most abnormalities turn out to be benign conditions.

This quick and inexpensive oral cancer examination will allow any serious condition to be caught at the earliest possible time, when treatments are the most effective.

An oral cancer screening such as this should be conducted every year, and is easily incorporated into your routine visits for health check-ups, or cleanings and regular exams at the dental office.
